Criminal Cases in the Jefferson County Courts
Jefferson County is part of Idaho's Seventh Judicial District. Its Magistrate Division handles misdemeanor arraignments, trials, and sentences. It also handles traffic matters and the first stages of felony cases. A felony defendant first appears before a magistrate, where counsel, release, and the preliminary hearing are addressed. If probable cause is found, the felony moves to District Court for trial-level proceedings.
The Jefferson County Courts office is at 210 Courthouse Way, Suite 120, Rigby. The clerk can be reached at 208-745-6313, option 3. The public counter is generally open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; filings received after 4 p.m. are processed the next court day. Confirm closures and current hours before travel.
The county's official court profile shows where local case access begins.

That local counter is the practical fallback when an online entry lacks the document needed.
Search Jefferson Cases in iCourt
The statewide Idaho iCourt Portal is the first online channel for a Jefferson County filing. Its browser client requires JavaScript and cookies, and it offers registration and sign-in controls. Portal terms caution that a name and date-of-birth match is not positive identification. Use the exact case number whenever possible, select Jefferson as the county, and compare the caption and event history.
| Search detail | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Case number | Best key for returning to one known prosecution. |
| Party name | Use full legal spelling and test known variants. |
| County | Choose Jefferson to avoid similarly named parties elsewhere. |
| Case caption | Confirm the state case and named defendant. |
| Event history | Read dates for hearings, orders, disposition, and sentence. |

Online results are an index and access tool, not a fingerprint-based identity decision or a substitute for the clerk's full file.
How to Search Case Records
A careful Jefferson County criminal case search moves from a broad index result to an exact court record. Keep the search narrow and record the details needed by the clerk.
- Search iCourt by case number, or use the full party name and limit the result to Jefferson County.
- Compare the caption, case type, filing date, and chronological events. Do not rely on a common name alone.
- Record the exact case number and identify the particular charging document, order, judgment, or hearing entry needed.
- Use the courthouse kiosk for fuller public access or contact the Suite 120 clerk by phone or at the counter.
- Ask for a copy quote and state whether an ordinary or certified copy is required. No exact current criminal-copy fee is published.
Idaho court records are governed by judicial access rules rather than the ordinary county public-record request process. The Idaho courts' records access resources help distinguish a court-file request from an agency report request.
An official court access-resource image gives context for that distinction.

For a case that is visible but incomplete online, the Jefferson County clerk and kiosk are the next channels.
Get Jefferson Files at Suite 120
Ask for existing records with enough detail to locate them. A case number is ideal. If it is unknown, provide the full party name, an approximate filing or hearing date, and Jefferson County. Then identify the record: chronological case summary, complaint or information, dispositive order, judgment, or another public filing. “Dispositive” means the order that resolves a charge or case.

Public counter: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
After-4 p.m. filings process next court day.
The clerk can explain available copy formats and quote the current charge. The office cannot supply a published fee that the county has not posted, so request the price before ordering. A courthouse kiosk may expose more of the public file than the remote portal.
What the Case File Shows
A public case file is broader than a booking record. Under Idaho Court Administrative Rule 32, public material can include the party index, caption, case number, chronological events, hearings, minutes, pleadings, motions, affidavits, briefs, findings, orders, judgments, and admitted evidence unless an exemption applies.
| Caption and case number | Identifies the prosecution and provides the best retrieval key. |
|---|---|
| Charging document | States charges actually filed, which may differ from arrest allegations. |
| Chronological summary | Lists dated hearings, filings, rulings, and status changes. |
| Plea and disposition | Shows the formal response and result for each resolved charge. |
| Judgment and sentence | Records the court's final judgment and ordered sanctions. |
| Public filings | May include motions, responses, memoranda, and admitted evidence. |
The Idaho Court Administrative Rules define both access and limits.

Rule 32 is the key authority for deciding which Jefferson County case records are public, redacted, or withheld.
Jefferson Felonies Move Between Courts
A felony does not begin with a District Court trial. The Magistrate Division handles the first appearance, bail, and preliminary examination. If the evidence supports probable cause, the matter is bound over to District Court. An information may then frame the felony charges for arraignment and later proceedings. Misdemeanor cases normally remain in the Magistrate Division through trial and sentence.
Idaho also does not use a statewide Class A, B, or C felony ladder. A record should state felony, misdemeanor, or infraction, along with the offense and statute. When an offense law supplies no different punishment, Idaho Code provides default limits, but many offense statutes set their own ranges. Classification helps identify the Jefferson County court path; it does not replace reading the charged statute.
Note: A magistrate event in a felony file may be an early stage rather than the final trial venue.
Stages of a Criminal Case
The docket reflects a sequence, though a plea or dismissal may shorten it:
Charges Filed → Arraignment → Pretrial → Plea or Trial → Disposition → Sentencing
A complaint or indictment starts the court file. After an arrest, the initial appearance addresses counsel and release. In a felony, the preliminary hearing tests probable cause before bind-over. Motions, disclosure, and negotiation follow. A plea or trial resolves guilt, a disposition records each charge's outcome, and judgment states the sentence. An appeal may create a related appellate record.
- Arraignment
- The hearing where the charge and plea are addressed.
- Disposition
- The formal result of a charge, such as conviction, acquittal, or dismissal.
- Withheld judgment
- An Idaho procedure delaying judgment subject to successful conditions.
- Restitution
- Court-ordered payment for a loss tied to the case.
Two Jefferson Case Offices
The Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney prosecutes state and county matters in the District Court and Magistrate Division. The official county page lists Paul Butikofer at 210 Courthouse Way, Suite 220, 208-745-5888. That office's role does not make it the clerk or custodian of the judicial docket.
The prosecutor's official profile adds local context.

Filed pleadings and court outcomes still must be checked in the court file.
The Jefferson County Public Defender page directs applicants to obtain a form from Magistrate Court clerks; a judge decides eligibility. The published phone is 208-701-7345. County and state directories conflict on the street number and a fax digit, so verify location by phone.
The public defender resource reflects that separate court function.

Neither counsel's office replaces iCourt or the clerk for a neutral copy of the official case record.
Access & Restrictions
Public access has firm boundaries. Presentence reports, pretrial risk assessments, protected juvenile and victim data, unreturned warrants, pending warrant affidavits, and sealed or shielded records can be withheld. Public electronic filings display only the final four digits of Social Security and account or identification numbers, and only the birth year is public.
ICAR 32 governs Idaho judicial records, exemptions, redaction, sealing, and Clean Slate shielding. The ordinary Idaho Public Records Act does not override those court rules.
Dismissal does not automatically erase a Jefferson County court case. Narrow BCI expungement may apply after specified nonfiling, acquittal, or dismissal outcomes. Clean Slate shielding may hide an eligible case from public access after the statutory waiting and completion rules, but it does not destroy the file. The defendant, judicial staff, prosecutors, and law enforcement retain authorized access.
When a known case is absent, confirm the number and county first. Then ask the clerk whether the issue is indexing, restricted access, sealing, or shielding. Do not infer that no case exists from one failed name search.
Federal Cases Near Jefferson County
Federal criminal matters are not Jefferson County District Court files. Jefferson County lies in the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho. PACER provides federal dockets and documents at $0.10 per page, generally capped at $3 for a case document or report. Quarterly use of $30 or less is waived through 2026.
The nearest staffed eastern federal clerk counter is at 801 E. Sherman Street, Room 119, Pocatello, open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mountain Time; call 208-478-4123. Terminal viewing is free. Lobby self-prints cost $0.10 per page, while clerk-made copies cost $0.50 per page. CourtListener's RECAP can supplement PACER, but it is not a complete government source.
